I drive or walk under the viaduct at Irving Park Road almost everyday. About twice a year, semi drivers who’ve under-estimated their load height, get jammed against the structural beams of the Kennedy Expressway. This is the first time, I’ve ever seen a semi wedged precariously on two wheels. Since the traffic backup was so terrible, I didn’t stick around to find out how the city got this “fairly wedged” semi onto its four wheels and out of there. Another true urban story.

My dear yellow Labrador, Buddy was such a trooper. He was patient and gentle. He never stressed out about anything. He’d even let me dress him up when i was getting a little punchy over the short, cold, winter days. Needless to say, that was my question.

Chicago gardens by nature are very small. Ours, approximately 28 ft by 50 ft long holds a one-car garage and lots of beautiful flowers planted by my husband. This photo of the garden at its peak bloom is surrounded by a Victorian lace pattern. Knotted brown wool oozes through a tear in the photo. I wanted to show how, even a little city garden, can’t be held in place by a small frame.

My husband loves his flowers but I love to grow food. This Covid summer we stuck around our home more than usual and the produce shows it. Campari and cherry tomatoes, green beans, sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, dill, and even potatoes. What a haul!
